How to Rank Your Business on Google Maps: 2026 Guide for Nashik, Pune & Any City

By Atharva Nighot, Co-Founder at NexLoop · Published · 6 min read

Quick answer

Google ranks Maps results on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). To rank higher in Nashik, Pune or any other city, complete and verify your Google Business Profile, pick the right primary category, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, earn genuine reviews, and link a fast website page with the same details.

When someone searches "café near me", "dentist in Gangapur Road, Nashik", "salon in Baner" or "AC repair Pune", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top, often called the local pack, before any normal website results. Those three get most of the calls and direction requests.

The good news: Google explains how it picks them, and most local businesses skip the basics. The steps below work in any city in India. We use Nashik and Pune as examples because that's where we work most, so swap in your own city and neighbourhoods.

How Google decides who ranks on Maps

According to Google's own Business Profile help, local results are based mainly on three factors:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for. Complete, detailed information helps Google understand what you do.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the location in the search, or from the searcher if they didn't name a place.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, based on information from across the web: links, articles, directories, and your Google review count and rating.

You can't move your shop closer to every customer, so distance is mostly fixed. Everything below improves relevance and prominence, and you control both.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Google will verify that you really run the business, usually by video, phone or postcard. An unverified profile can't rank properly or be edited reliably.

Step 2: Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific category that describes your main business, not the broadest one:

Business Weaker choice Better primary category
Café on College Road, Nashik Restaurant Cafe
Dental clinic in Kothrud, Pune Doctor Dentist
Salon in Indira Nagar, Nashik Beauty Hair salon or Beauty salon
Web design agency in Baner, Pune Software company Website designer
Turf in Wakad, Pune Sports Sports complex or Football field

Then add secondary categories for your other real services. Don't add categories for things you don't offer; it confuses Google and customers.

Step 3: Use your real business name

Use the name on your signboard and documents. Adding keywords, such as "Sharma Sweets Best Sweet Shop Nashik" or "Best Gym in Pune Fitness Zone", breaks Google's guidelines and is a common reason profiles get suspended. Competitors can also report it.

Step 4: Get your address, area and hours exactly right

  • Storefront businesses (shops, clinics, cafés) should show their full address, matching what's on the door and on your documents.
  • Service-area businesses that go to customers (plumbers, pest control, home tutors) can hide the address and list the areas they serve, such as Nashik Road, Cidco, Satpur and Gangapur Road in Nashik, or Hinjewadi, Wakad, Hadapsar and Viman Nagar in Pune. Pune is large, so list the areas you genuinely cover rather than the whole city.
  • Set regular hours, and add special hours for Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi and other holidays. Google often warns searchers when festival hours may differ, and accurate hours stop customers turning up to a closed shutter.

Step 5: Fill in every section

Profiles with complete information give Google more to match against searches. Add:

  • A clear description of what you do and who you serve, in plain language
  • Your services or products, each with a short description and, where it makes sense, a price
  • Attributes such as wheelchair access, Wi-Fi or women-owned
  • Your website, phone number, and a booking or WhatsApp link if you have one

Step 6: Add real photos, and keep adding them

Upload genuine photos of your shopfront (so people recognise it from the road), your interior, team, products and work. Avoid stock images. Fresh photos and weekly posts about offers, new products or events show customers and Google that the business is active.

Step 7: Earn genuine reviews, and reply to all of them

Google says review count and score factor into local ranking. What works:

  • Ask every happy customer, at the moment they're happiest: at the counter, after a service, in your WhatsApp follow-up.
  • Make it easy: print a QR code that opens your review link, and share the link on WhatsApp.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and within a few days. A calm reply to a bad review reassures future customers.

What not to do: Google's policies prohibit fake reviews, paying or offering discounts for reviews, and asking only happy customers while steering unhappy ones away. Profiles caught doing this can lose reviews or be suspended.

Step 8: Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere

Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Make sure your name, address and phone number (NAP) are written the same way on:

  • Your website (footer and contact page)
  • Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART
  • Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect) and Bing Places

Mismatches, such as an old phone number on Justdial or "Shop No. 4" in one place and "Shop 4" in another, weaken trust in your listing. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

Your website supports your Maps ranking. Make sure it has:

  • A page about your location and services, for example "Dental Clinic in Gangapur Road, Nashik" or "Physiotherapy Clinic in Aundh, Pune", with your full address, phone, hours and an embedded map
  • LocalBusiness structured data (schema) with the same name, address and phone
  • A mobile-friendly, fast design, because most local searches happen on phones
  • Your Business Profile's website link pointing to that page

Step 10: Get mentioned locally

Prominence grows when other local sites mention you. Ideas that work for local businesses:

  • Join and get listed by local trade bodies and associations relevant to your industry
  • Sponsor a local event, sports tournament or college fest that links to your website
  • Get featured in Nashik and Pune news sites, food bloggers' and local Instagram pages' roundups
  • Partner with nearby non-competing businesses and list each other

Mistakes that get local businesses suspended

  • Keyword-stuffed business names
  • Using a home address or virtual office when you serve customers at a different location
  • Creating multiple listings for the same business
  • Fake, bought or incentivised reviews
  • Changing your name, address or category frequently

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

It varies with how competitive your category and area are. Pune is a much bigger and more competitive market than Nashik, so the same category usually takes longer there. A properly set-up profile often starts appearing for searches in your immediate area within weeks, while ranking across a whole city for competitive searches takes months of steady reviews, posts and local mentions. Track your progress in the Performance section of your Business Profile: searches, calls, website clicks and direction requests.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google does not let you pay for a higher organic ranking on Maps; paid ads are shown separately and labelled as sponsored.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

Common reasons are an unverified or suspended profile, a broad or wrong primary category, incomplete information, very few reviews, or simply being farther from the searcher than competitors. Search from a different area of Nashik or Pune to see how distance affects your results.

How many reviews do I need to rank on Google Maps?

There is no fixed number. Google says review count and rating both affect ranking, so aim for a steady flow of genuine reviews and compare yourself with the businesses currently in the top three for your search.

Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?

Yes. A website with your matching name, address and phone, location-specific pages, LocalBusiness schema and fast mobile performance helps Google trust and understand your business, and gives searchers more reasons to choose you.

Can a service business without a shop rank on Google Maps?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and list the areas they serve. They still need a verified profile, the right category, reviews and consistent details across the web.
